If one is looking for a beautiful and rewarding 4-day trek in the Himalayas, then this trek has to be amongst the top. This is one of the most enchanting short treks and lies in the Garhwal region of Himalayas. This treks are in a protected area and hence there are minimal signs of civilization.

In the first leg of the trek we hike up to Deoria Tal. This is a beautiful lake at an altitude of 7800 ft and has captivating surroundings with forests all around. The Chandrashila Peak feels like an arms - length away and the reflection of the mighty peak in the crystal clear waters of the lake creates a beautiful effect. We trek from Deoria Tal to Chopta. From here we will trek up to the Tungnath temple, which at an altitude of 11,300 ft is the highest Shiva shrine in the world. The trek further takes us to the Chandrashila peak.

Like many places in the Himalayas, there is a story associated with Deoria Tal. It is said that when the Pandavas were in exile and were hiding from the Kaurava king, Duryodhan, they stopped nearby for a rest. When their mother Kunti felt thirsty, her four sons one by one went to fetch water from this lake but died, as they could not answer the question put forth to them by the Yaksha Devta who resided here. When the eldest son Yudishtra's turn came, he answered all questions correctly and with the result the dead brothers also came back to life.

Along the route of this full trek, in addition to the abundant flora and fauna, one gets wonderful views of the Himalayan giants including Bandarpoonch, Kedar, Chaukhamba peak and many more. From Tungnath you can trek up a further 1 km to the summit of Chandrashilla peak at about 13,500 ft. The 180 degree view of the snow-capped peaks and the underlying valleys all around make Chopta-Chandrashila trek well worth it. Chandrashila peak is one of the most liked destinations for trekking in India.

The trek begins from Sari, a small village ahead of Rudraprayag. The first leg is a comfortable trek to Deoria Tal. The second leg of the trek is to Chopta which is a full day trek through beautiful forests and meadows. The final leg is more testing and covers Tunganath and Chandrashila. This part also presents the opportunity to enjoy a snow trek.

So if you want to have some fun in the meadows and on the snowy slopes of the Garhwal Himalayas, pack your rucksacks and head on towards Haridwar.
